Safe Waste in Shropshire: January 2008

Members of Safe Waste in Shropshire leafleted members of the public and maintained a presence with placards and banners between 10am and 12 noon today.

The response from the public was excellent with the majority of drivers stopping to take leaflets and showing interest in the issue. Some people were already aware of the proposed incinerator and said they opposed it.

We are Shropshire people opposed to incineration and landfill as an answer to waste disposal - anywhere!

We are NOT 'Nimbys'. We don't want our rubbish sent to nearby counties to be burnt, landfilled or thrown into old mines.

In 2007, Shropshire County Council signed a 27-year contract with the French multinational, Veolia, to manage the county's waste. The contract includes a burner-incinerator at Battlefield, Shrewsbury and a planning application has now gone in for this. The council and Veolia do not like the word 'incinerator', preferring to call it an 'Energy from Waste' plant. This makes incineration sound green. Unfortunately it is not.

Emissions from incinerators affect people's health in areas downwind up to 16 miles away. Incinerators undermine recycling and have a large carbon footprint. The energy an incinerator produces comes at a large cost to the environment, our health and our pockets. Please do not buy in!

The whole idea of burning waste is outdated, an unacceptable waste of resources and even the government now admits that it is the worst possible option. Incinerators are being turned down in other parts of the country in favour of greener methods such as anaeorobic digestion and MBT (mechanical biological treatment) in conjunction with better recycling, reduction and recovery methods. None of them involve burning.

Burning waste is an extremely inefficient way of producing electricity that only benefits the incinerator operator and not the public.
